Troubleshooting

IPv6 Not Working: Diagnostic Method

An IPv6 outage can come from carrier access, router, addressing, DNS, or firewall.

Confirm availability

First check that the offer and the box really provide IPv6. A local address starting with fe80:: does not prove access to the Internet: each IPv6 interface normally has one for the local link.

Control addressing and route

The device must be given a global or network-appropriate address and a default route. Depending on the architecture, this is done through router ads, DHCPv6, or both. Inconsistent manual configuration can prevent packets from returning.

Distinguishing between DNS and connectivity

A name can fail while a direct IPv6 destination remains reachable, or vice versa. So compare AAAA resolution, route, and access to a known destination. Avoid permanently disabling IPv6 just to hide a DNS outage.

Firewall and packet size

IPv6 depends on ICMPv6 for neighbor discovery and some path information. Excessive filtering can break connectivity. Maintain a firewall policy, but allow essential ICMPv6 messages.

Frequently asked questions

Does a fe80:: address give access to the Internet?

Not alone. It is used for the local link and does not replace a global IPv6 address and route.

Should you disable IPv6?

This is not a lasting correction. It is better to identify whether the failure is due to the operator, router, DNS or firewall.
