Practical guide

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number identifies a network that advertises routes over the Internet.

What is it used for?

The BGP protocol exchanges routes between autonomous systems to carry global traffic. An ASN identifies the network organization that advertises one or more address ranges.

DSC and ISP

The organization displayed for an ASN is not always the trade name you are familiar with. A group can operate multiple ASNs, and a range can be managed by a subsidiary, hosting provider, or freight forwarder.

Public Information

Internet registries publish resource allocations. RDAP allows you to consult this information in a structured way: range, register, organization, technical or administrative contacts depending on the case.

Practical use

The ASN helps diagnose an operator, locate a hosting provider, understand a network route, or check if an IP belongs to a cloud provider rather than residential access.

Frequently asked questions

AS12345 refers to an ASN with the commonly used AS prefix.

Does the ASN give the exact owner of an IP?

It gives a public network organization, not necessarily the end user.
