Practical guide

How to change your IP address

The method depends on your carrier, your type of connection, and the purpose you're looking for.

Reconnection

On a dynamic offer, restarting the box or restarting the connection can sometimes assign a new IP. This is never guaranteed: some operators reassign the same address for a long time.

Mobile network

Switching from Wi-Fi to mobile network usually uses another public connection. Conversely, going back to Wi-Fi reuses the address of your box or your fixed access.

VPN and proxy

A VPN or proxy presents its server address to the remote site. This can be useful for privacy with regard to the site you are visiting, but adds an intermediary to whom you entrust some of your traffic.

Limitations

Changing IP does not delete account IDs, cookies, sessions, service-side history, or browser fingerprinting. It's a network action, not a complete reset of digital identity.

Frequently asked questions

Does restarting my box always change the IP?

No. It depends on the operator, the network lease and the offer.

Does a VPN hide my IP from the site I visited?

Yes, the site usually sees the VPN's IP, but the VPN provider becomes a new middleman.
