Practical guide

Can I be located with my IP?

An IP usually locates a country or network region, never a reliable postal address.

Variable accuracy

The country is often correct, but the city can correspond to the operator's point of presence, a network center or a previous attribution. On mobile, network outputs can be very far from the actual location.

Why the discrepancies

IP ranges are being reassigned, operators are reorganizing their networks, and geolocation databases are being updated at different rates. Two providers can therefore give different cities for the same IP.

What you need to remember

An IP geolocation is useful for adapting a language, detecting a country or diagnosing a network. It must not be used to assert a physical address or to identify a person.

Our method

See MyIP displays the location as approximate, does not add it to the URL, and does not record the raw IP. Private or reserved addresses are not sent to the enrichment service.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the city displayed fake?

It may represent the carrier's network rather than your actual location.

Can a site find my postal address with my IP?
