Practical guide

Public or private IP: what's the difference?

A public IP is routable on the Internet; a private IP remains in your local network.

Public IP

The public IP is the IP that sites see when they respond to your connection. It is usually assigned by the operator to your box, router or mobile device.

Private IP

A private IP is used to identify a device inside a local network. Your computer may have 192.168.1.12 while your phone has 192.168.1.13, but both go out over the internet through the same public IP.

NAT and sharing

NAT allows multiple private devices to share a public IP. This is convenient and common, but it complicates incoming connections like home hosting or some port forwarding.

Security

A private IP is not complete protection. The box's firewall, updates, and strong passwords remain essential. A public IP doesn't automatically expose your files, but it does make your connection reachable at the network level.

Frequently asked questions

Can my private IP be seen by a site?

Normally not. A site sees the public exit address, not the local address of your device.

Why is my computer showing 192.168.x.x?

This is probably its local address assigned by your router or router.
